Foods to Avoid or Recommended for Sinusitis or a Sinus Inection

It has long being recognized that the food you eat and the lifestyle you lead can impact on your health.

A common belief is that nasal congestion is due to a buildup of mucus. However, inflammation is the leading cause of congestion, sinus problems, sinusitis, hayfever and allergies.

Food and drinks that should be avoided include:

  • Caffeinated drinks can lead to dehydration, which can cause mucus to become thick and clog up the nasal passages
  • Chilled items such as ice cream and chilled drinks can thicken mucus
  • Dairy products can cause mucus to thicken or an increased production of mucus
  • Alcohol tends to dehydrate the body causing mucus to thicken and become lodged in the nasal cavities (congestion)
  • Spicy foods may or may not help for a sinus infection. In some cases, spicy food may cause your nose to run which clears the blockage, or it could aggravate the problem.

Dietary recommendations for sinusitis include:

  • Eating foods rich in vitamin C, like grapefruit, oranges, and tangerines may help clear congestion and add the body in fighting off the sinus infection
  • Eating foods rich in vitamin A like egg yolk, pumpkin, carrot, leafy vegetables, tomato, mango and papaya which is known to help build healthy mucus membranes in the head and throat.
  • Add ginger, garlic or horseradish to your daily recipes as they contain agents that break up mucus and relieve congestion
  • Omega 3 fatty acids found in fish such as wild salmon, cod, and sardines are beneficial for decreasing inflammation.
  • Tart cherries and Turmeric spice help reduce inflammation.
